Languages may correspond to certain experiences. I prefer French for poetry and exploring questions of identity because I explored those topics while I was abroad. Often while speaking in French, I find my comportment is more sophisticated than that I use in American settings. Since it’s my native tongue, English is banal and reserved for casual settings, in my mind. Drs. Muriel Cros and Noëlle Mathis research this phenomenon (“choisir ses langues”) and present a fascinating talk each semester at IAU College, Aix-en-Provence.
