Language: French
Setting: 1920s/1930s French bourgeoise society
Remarks: Written with Dalí, L’Âge d’or evokes Freudian themes and critiques the bourgeoise values of early-20th-century France. The opening sequence with the scorpions suggests the violence that follows. Like most Surrealist works, the images seem disparate but all support Buñuel’s critique.
Keywords: bourgeoise hypocrisy, film parlant, modernity and antiquity, repressed desire, surrealism
